Warning! New EPA Refrigerant Mandate Affecting Homeowners

Starting January 1st, 2025, a new EPA mandate will take effect. This new mandate aims to phase out the use of R-410A in residential HVAC systems. What does this mean for you? As manufacturers transition to R-454B and R32 compliant systems, prices for new replacements are expected to increase, and there could be significant delays in equipment availability. Replacing with these newer systems may also require modifications to your existing setup. If your current HVAC system is aging or nearing replacement, now is the time to act! Secure your R-410A compatible system before it's too late!

Why is R410 Being Phased-Out?

You may not know this, but R-410A runs a higher risk of having a refrigerant leak during maintenance and repair work. Due to this increased risk of refrigerant leakage, the EPA is focusing on removing the use of R410A in residential HVAC systems. Their goal is to reduce harmful contaminants to the ozone. This phase-out will replace the use of R410A with newer more sustainable refrigerants like R-454B and R32.

What Type Of Refrigerant is in your HVAC system?

You can check the type of refrigerant that your HVAC system uses by referencing your owner’s manual. If you are unable to locate your owner’s manual or you aren’t sure you should contact a professional like the ones at Air Dynamics HVAC. Our qualified technicians can determine what type of refrigerant your system uses and advise you if your unit is repairable or in need of replacement.

What If my hvAC unit uses an older refrigerant, should I be worried?

If your HVAC system uses R-22 or R-410A, you don’t need to replace it right away. However, keep in mind that R-22 supplies are running low. If your system is older and uses R-22, you’ll eventually need to upgrade as this refrigerant becomes harder to find.

For systems using R-410A, there’s no immediate concern, as supplies of R-410A are expected to last for years to come. But, if your system is aging and needs replacing, now’s the time to act! As manufacturers switch to R-454B and R32 systems, replacement costs are likely to rise, and delays in equipment availability may occur.

Should I repair or replace my HVAC unit?

The decision to repair or replace your system can depend on a few things. Is your air conditioning system still functioning at its best? Has it been well maintained? Free of any major issues? Then you’re likely fine to continue servicing your HVAC unit as normal. If however, your system is older or has needed frequent repairs in the past it may be worth considering a replacement.

The average lifespan of an AC unit or heat pump is 15-20 years. If your unit is past its prime or you’re considering a replacement you can reach out to a professional from Air Dynamics HVAC by clicking here.
